How do animals navigate long distances without any map?

Animals use a variety of built-in sensory systems to navigate. Many birds and sea turtles detect Earth's magnetic field through magnetite crystals or light-sensitive proteins in their eyes, essentially giving them a biological compass. Salmon use their sense of smell to return to the exact stream where they were born. Monarch butterflies combine a time-compensated sun compass with an internal circadian clock to maintain consistent direction during migration. Other cues include star patterns, infrasound, polarized light, and even the position of the sun. These systems are often used in combination rather than relying on a single method. Much of this ability is hardwired genetically, meaning young animals can navigate correctly even without learning from experienced individuals.
