How do I know if my cholesterol levels are too high?

The only way to know your cholesterol levels is through a blood test called a lipid panel or lipid profile, ordered by a doctor. You typically cannot feel high cholesterol since it causes no symptoms on its own. Generally, a total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL is considered desirable, 200-239 is borderline high, and 240 or above is high. LDL (bad cholesterol) should ideally be below 100 mg/dL, while HDL (good cholesterol) should be 60 or above. Adults should get tested every four to six years, or more frequently if they have risk factors like family history, obesity, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Your doctor can interpret your specific results in context of your overall health.
