How do vaccines work to prevent disease?
Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens without causing the actual disease. They introduce a harmless component into the body, such as a weakened or killed virus, a protein from the pathogen's surface, or genetic instructions (as with mRNA vaccines) that prompt cells to produce a recognizable protein. The immune system responds by producing antibodies and creating memory cells.
If the vaccinated person later encounters the real pathogen, their immune system recognizes it quickly and mounts a rapid, strong defense before the infection can cause serious illness. This memory response is much faster than what an unvaccinated person's immune system could produce, effectively neutralizing the threat before significant harm occurs.
