How does a circuit breaker protect your home?
A circuit breaker protects your home by automatically shutting off electrical flow when it detects a problem, such as an overload or short circuit. When too much current flows through a circuit, the breaker's internal mechanism trips, physically breaking the connection and stopping electricity before it can overheat wires and cause a fire.
Unlike a fuse, which burns out and must be replaced, a circuit breaker can simply be reset after the underlying problem is fixed. Each breaker in your panel is rated for a specific amperage, so if demand exceeds that limit, it trips immediately. This prevents damaged wiring, overheated outlets, and electrical fires, making it one of the most important safety devices in a home.
