The lymphatic system protects against disease primarily by housing and transporting immune cells, particularly lymphocytes, which identify and destroy pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells. Lymph nodes act as filtering stations where harmful substances are trapped and attacked by white blood cells before they can spread through the body.
The system also produces and matures B and T lymphocytes in organs like the thymus and spleen. B cells produce antibodies that neutralize specific pathogens, while T cells directly kill infected or cancerous cells. Additionally, the lymphatic system drains excess interstitial fluid, removing waste products and pathogens from tissues, preventing them from accumulating and causing infection or inflammation.
