How does your brain store long-term memories over time?

Long-term memories are stored through a process called consolidation, which begins in the hippocampus. When you experience something, neurons fire together and strengthen their connections through a mechanism called long-term potentiation, essentially making synaptic links more efficient. Initially the hippocampus acts as a temporary hub, coordinating the storage of new information. Over time, through repeated recall and during sleep, memories are gradually transferred to the neocortex for permanent storage. Sleep is particularly important because the brain replays experiences during slow-wave and REM sleep, reinforcing neural pathways. The more you retrieve a memory, the stronger and more stable it becomes. Emotional experiences tend to consolidate more strongly due to the amygdala's involvement, which is why vivid or frightening events are often remembered more clearly.
