What are common symptoms of low iron in adults?

Low iron, which can lead to iron deficiency anemia, commonly causes fatigue and weakness as the most prominent symptoms, since the body struggles to produce enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen efficiently. People often experience shortness of breath, dizziness, and headaches, especially during physical activity. Pale skin, brittle nails, and hair loss are also typical signs. Some adults develop a sore or swollen tongue, cold hands and feet, and difficulty concentrating or brain fog. A less common but distinctive symptom is pica, which is an unusual craving for non-food items like ice, dirt, or starch. Restless leg syndrome has also been linked to low iron levels. Symptoms can be subtle at first and worsen gradually as iron stores deplete.
