What are early signs of iron deficiency?
Early signs of iron deficiency include fatigue and weakness, which occur because the body can't produce enough hemoglobin to carry oxygen efficiently. You may also notice pale skin, particularly in the inner eyelids, gums, and nail beds. Other common early symptoms include shortness of breath during mild activity, headaches, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating. Cold hands and feet are also typical, as reduced oxygen delivery affects circulation. Some people experience brittle nails, hair loss, or an unusual craving for non-food items like ice, dirt, or starch, a condition called pica. A racing or irregular heartbeat can also appear. These symptoms often develop gradually, making them easy to overlook until the deficiency becomes more severe.
