What are signs you are overtraining and need rest?
Overtraining shows up in both physical and mental ways. Physically, you may notice persistent muscle soreness that doesn't go away between sessions, declining performance despite consistent effort, frequent illness due to a suppressed immune system, disrupted sleep, elevated resting heart rate, and nagging injuries or joint pain. You might also feel unusually fatigued throughout the day, not just during workouts.
Mentally and emotionally, overtraining often causes irritability, lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, and a general dread of workouts you normally enjoy. If you find yourself pushing hard but getting weaker or slower rather than stronger, that's a clear signal. The solution is scheduled rest, reduced training volume, better sleep, and adequate nutrition to allow your body to recover and adapt properly.
