What causes bloating after meals and how do you fix it?
Bloating after meals is usually caused by excess gas production during digestion, swallowing air while eating, or slow gastric emptying. Common triggers include eating too fast, carbonated drinks, high-fiber foods like beans and cruciferous vegetables, dairy if you're lactose intolerant, gluten sensitivity, and artificial sweeteners like sorbitol. Gut bacteria fermenting certain carbohydrates (FODMAPs) is another frequent culprit.
To fix it, eat slowly and chew thoroughly, avoid talking while chewing, cut back on carbonated drinks, and identify food triggers through an elimination approach. Peppermint tea, ginger, and fennel seeds can relieve symptoms. Regular movement after meals helps too. If bloating is persistent or painful, see a doctor to rule out IBS, SIBO, or other digestive conditions.
