What causes muscle cramps during exercise?
Muscle cramps during exercise are most commonly caused by fatigue and altered neuromuscular control, where overworked muscles lose their ability to regulate contraction and relaxation properly. When muscles tire, the nerve signals controlling them become dysregulated, leading to sustained involuntary contractions.
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, particularly low sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, also contribute by disrupting the electrical signals that muscles need to contract and relax normally. Exercising in heat worsens this by accelerating fluid and salt loss through sweat. Poor conditioning, inadequate warm-up, and exercising at high intensity beyond your fitness level increase the risk. Stretching, staying hydrated, maintaining electrolyte balance, and gradually building exercise intensity are the most effective preventive measures.
