What did Freud believe about the unconscious mind?

Freud believed the unconscious mind was a vast reservoir of thoughts, memories, desires, and feelings that were hidden from conscious awareness. He argued that much of human behavior is driven by unconscious forces, particularly repressed memories and desires that are too threatening or painful to confront directly. These hidden contents, he believed, often originated in childhood experiences and conflicts. Freud thought the unconscious expressed itself through dreams, slips of the tongue, neurotic symptoms, and free association. He saw it as constantly influencing behavior without people realizing it. His therapeutic method, psychoanalysis, was designed to bring unconscious material into conscious awareness, which he believed could relieve psychological suffering by allowing patients to confront and process repressed conflicts.
