What is a zero-based budget and how does it work?
A zero-based budget is a budgeting method where your income minus all your expenses equals zero. Every dollar you earn is assigned a specific purpose, whether that's bills, groceries, savings, debt payments, or entertainment, so nothing is left unallocated.
It works by starting from scratch each month. You list your total income, then assign every dollar to a category until you reach zero. If you earn $3,000, you plan exactly where all $3,000 goes before the month begins. Unlike traditional budgeting where you track spending after the fact, zero-based budgeting is proactive and intentional. It forces you to justify each expense and makes it harder to mindlessly overspend, since every dollar already has a job.
