What is the easiest way to patch a small wall hole?

For a small hole like one from a nail or screw, the easiest fix is to use spackling compound. Just apply a small amount directly into the hole with a putty knife or even your finger, smooth it flush with the wall surface, and let it dry completely. Once dry, lightly sand it smooth with fine-grit sandpaper, then touch up with matching paint. For slightly larger holes up to about an inch, self-adhesive mesh patches work well. Stick the patch over the hole, apply spackling or joint compound over it in thin coats, let each coat dry, sand smooth, and paint. The whole process takes minimal skill and the materials are inexpensive at any hardware store.
