Why do cuts and wounds heal on their own?

Wounds heal through a coordinated biological process involving several overlapping phases. When you get a cut, blood vessels constrict and platelets clump together to form a clot, stopping the bleeding. The clot also creates a temporary scaffold for repair. Inflammation follows, bringing white blood cells to the area to fight infection and clear debris. Then specialized cells called fibroblasts migrate in and produce collagen, a structural protein that rebuilds the damaged tissue. New blood vessels grow to supply the area with oxygen and nutrients. Finally, the skin contracts and remodels over weeks or months. This entire process is driven by chemical signals called growth factors that cells release to coordinate and communicate with each other throughout healing.
